 MISCELLANY

EndNotes

It was ten long years ago ...

I remember when
those sunny afternoons
first became scary and tense
and we all went home separately
and unhappy.

At first I thought
those days would pass
like clouds or a headache
and things would warm up again at home
but they didn't.

The afternoons became weeks
and months became years,
alone and empty while I grew up
without the comfort and love of family
on my own.

the other half tells him to “get lost.”

“Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible — the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.”

“We cannot know the consequences of suppressing a child's spontaneity when he is just beginning to be active. We may even suffocate life itself. That humanity which is revealed in all its intellectual splendor during the sweet and tender age of childhood should be respected with a kind of religious veneration. It is like the sun which appears at dawn or a flower just beginning to bloom. Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up himself to life.”

“If you want your children to improve,
let them overhear the nice things
you say about them to others.”
