Indiana youth doing good things
while in detention

The doghouses were presented to
Pet Refuge on Thursday
St. Joseph County Kids at the Juvenile Justice Center
are reaching out to the community. On Thursday they donated several
doghouses to Pet Refuge. The kids have been building the doghouses for a
month. It's a way for them to use math and learn skills they can use in
their everyday lives. Vicki McIntire from the Juvenile Justice Center
says, “If you can shingle a dog house, you can shingle your own house,
right? It has vinyl siding on it, so if you can put vinyl siding on a
dog house, you can put vinyl siding on your own home.” Some other
projects the young detainees have been working on are construction of a
solar water fountain and painting a mural on a courtyard wall.
