Anti-social scheme 'is lacking support'

The six-month Task and Finish Group set up to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Redhall area of Connah's Quay is failing as residents won't get involved, say police. It has failed to attract residents to take over the project from police and councillors, with only newsagent Simon Williams showing commitment.

“The group has not achieved all it initially set out to do,” said community beat manager PC Sue Carrington. “There are still serious problems with youth nuisance, but hopefully some ongoing projects and new schemes will have some impact. We still have the community fun day at the end of the month, but residents also have to come together to look at what these youths want to do in the long-term. They have nothing to occupy them, nowhere to go. Their behaviour for the most part stems from boredom. If the community got together they could possibly sort something out.”

The Task and Finish Group was set up for six months, a period which is coming to an end. One of its main aims was to hand responsibility for the group from police and civic leaders to residents of the Redhall so they could improve their environment and take control back from the youths. Not a single Redhall resident has joined the group.

Connah's Quay council chairman Aaron Shotton said: “'It really needs local people to take a lead. It is all very well us setting things up, but as soon as we leave they will slip away again. Local people need to show they have had enough of the fear at night and during the school holidays. They need to take ownership of the group and of their community. When they do that the problems will stop because everyone will be pulling in the same direction.”

“There are more residents then vandals. The trouble-makers are vastly outnumbered, the community just has to work together to make the area a nice place to live again.”
