Inauguration of SOS Children's Village, Entebbe
Who we are
SOS Children's Villages is a non-governmental and nondenominational
organisation providing long-term care for destitute, abandoned and
orphaned children in 131 countries. More than 50,000 children have found
a home in 439 SOS Children's Villages worldwide. Nearly 120,000 children
and youths attend SOS Schools, SOS Kindergartens and SOS Vocational
Training Centres, while more than 500,000 benefit from SOS Medical and
Social Centres and SOS Emergency Relief Programmes.
What we do
SOS Children's Villages give a permanent home in a family environment
to destitute children including those who have lost their parents. Each
child is looked after by an SOS mother, and grows up with other 8-10
boys and girls in a natural setting. Each of our villages has a capacity
for 120 children. Apart from the homes, we also run a school for 600
children, 2 kindergartens for 120 children each, and 2 medical centres
in Kakiri and Entebbe that serve children within SOS, and members of the
neighbouring communities.
How we run SOS in Uganda
Our facilities are managed by Professional, trained childcare workers
and managers. An SOS Mother looks after each family on a 24-hour basis.
A Board of Directors oversees the different facilities, ensuring that
each child receives proper care and education. SOS Children's Villages
Uganda is a locally registered Trust, and the Directors are prominent
Ugandan citizens and residents. Our Patron is Uganda's First Lady, Mrs.
Janet Museveni.
How is SOS Uganda financed?
Some of our running costs are raised locally through donations from
private individuals and corporate bodies. A small fee is charged to
community residents attending our school, kindergarten and medical
centre. Despite our intentions to raise money for our running costs
locally, it has only been possible to raise very limited amounts so far,
and at the moment our budget deficit is made up by donations through SOS
associations abroad. In the long run we will have to sustain ourselves.
We would like to express great thanks to our local sponsors including
Stanbic Bank, ENHAS, Celtel, Madvhani Group, Barclays Bank, World Food
Programme, Uganda Telecom Ltd, and Sabena Airlines for their donations.
We also extend special thanks to the ministries of Finance and Gender,
for all the support rendered to the work of SOS in Uganda. All donations
go towards the upkeep of an individual child to cover costs of food,
clothing, medical care and education. All income and expenditure is
accounted for according to generally accepted accounting practices. Our
records and statements are subject to strict external control and audit
procedures
