NUMBER 89 • 19 AUGUST 2002 •  PROGRAMS FOR STREET CHILDREN
INDEX OF QUOTES

Services to street children were different from those provided in traditional children’s homes. Street children are marginalised, even demonised, by society yet paradoxically they are often resilient and have a well-developed survival drive. They vote with their feet. They will simply leave programmes that do not meet their needs, or which infantilize or exploit them.

This keeps service providers on their toes! There is none of the complacency you sometimes find in traditional alternative care facilities where children are put there by the courts. Self-referral and an open door were non-negotiable principles.
