NUMBER 24 • 16 MAY 2002 • COERCION
INDEX OF QUOTES

Here is a lesson for some of our permissive parents and schools. What Neill knew even then, and what everyone not shackled by his preconceived notions soon learns, is that to submit to coercion leaves both child and adult with nothing but hatred or contempt for each other. If we permit someone to coerce or intimidate us, we stop being of much use to that person. We cannot help them because they do not respect us; and furthermore, we can not help them because we dislike them, whether or not we admit that to ourselves.
