NUMBER 45• 14 JUNE 2002 • PROMOTING ACTIVITIES
INDEX OF QUOTES

Many of our boys are products of the ‘spectator cult’, and are far happier looking-on than doing things. Whilst one has to accept a certain amount of this as a feature of life generally nowadays there seems to be an inordinate calling for some mental or physical effort.

The old ideas of skill or neatness of work with a touch of craftsmanship seem to be sadly lacking. Here we achieve best results by example. So often a boy who watches will emulate, given just a little stimulus; the moment we see a spark of enthusiasm for any (legal) activity, we follow it up by all means within our power.

To achieve this our range of activities in the school is a very wide one, but most are those called for by the boys rather than dictated by adults. Given a reasonable staff it is surprising what results can be shown – and all the time our sights are geared to the possibility of these activities being followed-up or enlarged when the boy returns home.
