The tragic tale of Tivoly
A young woman trying to escape her fathers oppressive reign succumbs to peer pressure and falls onto a path of self destruction. Such is the tale of young Tivoly oh, and its also written in the style of a Greek tragedy.
Drama students at Ladysmith Secondary School have been busy working on the production, which is titled Tivoly, after the main character. Its no ordinary play. In fact, it was written by LSS alum Rebecca Fairweather, who graduated from the school in 2001.
I started writing this play in April, said Fairweather, who is graduating from a First Nations Child and Youth Care program at Vancouver Island University. It is written in the form of a modern Greek tragedy. She said the play really comes from some of the teachings from her university program. We talk a lot about recognizing the importance of peoples stories, Fairweather said, adding they talk about listening, and really being present for peoples stories.
This story is about Tivoly (Meghan Wearne), and the cycles and patterns of her life. The tale is told from the perspective of the three fates. The plot is precipitated by Artemus (Alyxandar Szazs-Nicholson), Tivolys father. Fairweather said Tivolys father loves her, but wants to shelter her and he teaches her how to use a staff to protect herself. She feels controlled by him, Fairweather said.
