Child and Youth Worker students prepare for 10th Anniversary of W.A.L.K.
Sault College’s third- year students of the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) Program will be hosting the 10th annual “We All Love Kids” W.A.L.K. on Saturday April 10th. Proceeds from the walk will support the development of a summer recreational program called A Summer of Good Healthy Fun that will be run through the Brighter Beginning’s Children’s Program at the Soup Kitchen Community Centre. The community is invited to participate in this free family-friendly event with registration beginning at 10:00am this Saturday, April 6th at Sault College. There will be fun activities, entertainment and free food for all.
The student-run fundraising event is a class project that has the graduating CYW students involved in every aspect of the event, including where to flow event proceeds. This year’s class has chosen to support the development of a summer recreational program that will be run through the Brighter Beginning’s Children’s Program at the Soup Kitchen Community Centre. Transportation will be provided by bus leaving the Soup Kitchen at 10:00am for families from the downtown area that wish to attend the event. The bus will also be leaving the College at 2:00pm to transport families back to the bus terminal.
“We are working hard to make this day as special as possible” says Amy McFarlane, third-year CYW student and event planner. “Being the 10th Anniversary of this event, we are hoping for a good turn out and lots of donations to support this worthy cause.” In order to raise funds and awareness, students have been collecting pledges.
“In the past, fund-raising efforts of the 3rd year CYW students have supported many community organizations such as Algoma Family Services, Algoma Public Health, Infant Development program the Children’s Aid Society and local schools,” says Professor Donna Mansfield, Sault College CYW program. “The students gain valuable experience and knowledge of community development but are also able to directly support agencies that deliver much needed programs to children and their families in our community.” The efforts of the CYW W.A.L.K. throughout the years has raised over $50,000 for children and families in Sault Ste. Marie.
Parking for the event will be available in the Northern Avenue parking lot “A North” across from the College’s main entrance. Signs will be posted to direct the public.
