Luke Sherwood and his sister Maya might be only 10 and 12 respectively, but they have already achieved more than some adults.
With the help of their father, the two recently launched Kidz4Kidz Florida. It’s a charitable organization aimed to inspire a giving spirit in children. All the money raised goes to the Children’s Home Society of Florida, which helps abused, foster and orphaned children.
“It’s kids helping kids,” Luke said. “It’s a kid’s organization.”
Luke and Maya said the idea took shape about six months ago after helping out at the charity last Christmas.
“What really moved my sister and I was one girl,” Luke said. “All she wanted was a blue dress and that’s what made us realize how fortunate we are.”
The two siblings spent a night brainstorming with their father before they landed on the Kidz4Kidz concept. They realized that although most kids have the necessary things in life like food and shelter, not all get to enjoy just being kids.
“Like getting to play in an arcade or paying the $10 it costs to go on a field trip,” Maya said.
Since launching Kidz4Kidz Florida, they’ve raised $200 through the sale of a multi-colored rubber bracelet at their schools. They hope to see the program grow and have enlisted some of their peers to help out.
“We were raised to be humble,” Maya said.
“We have always been taught to think of others before ourselves,” said Luke. “We try to be the best people that we can.”
